About Us (FAQ)

Q:

What is garethmorgan.com?
A:This is the web site of Gareth Morgan Investments Ltd., an investment management service for personal investors. The web site contains a lot of information free to the public. It is the investors' mentor, assisting access to the best savings and investment advice and products for them.

Q:

Who are you?
A:We are an investment management company, established by the principals of Infometrics Ltd., a well-known business and investment management company formed by Dr Gareth Morgan and Andrew Gawith in 1982. A full description of that company is available on its web site, www.infometrics.co.nz.

Q:

Why wouldn't I manage my investments myself?
A:To efficiently manage a portfolio you need knowledge and time. You can acquire both – but at a cost of fees or your time or both. Portfolio management requires skill at managing asset allocation, currency exposure and instrument selection. Perhaps the most attribute of a portfolio manager is discipline - not getting carried away with the latest "hot" investment nor panicking when things go soft. Complacency is a common fault of do-it-yourselfers - leaving the portfolio in the bottom drawer when it all gets too much. The skill then, is devising the strategy which best suits a portfolio for a client with specific needs, needs that change over time. One size does not fit all. The role of fees is expanded upon in the article, Being realistic about fees.

Q:

Will you assess the advice of my current investment advisor?
A:Yes - on your invitation we are happy to pass some comments on your portfolio for free* and point out strengths and weaknesses.

Q:

Why do you do this for free?
A:We have said for many years that New Zealanders do not have a savings problem, but rather have a serious problem investing their savings prudently. Inflation-ripping the bank deposits of people in the 1970’s; "Blue chip" stocks being thought of as BIL and FCL in the 1980’s; forestry partnerships trapping hard-won savings in the 1990’s; and property syndicates destroying people’s savings recently – are all examples of Kiwi mass investment suicides. These not only hurt those involved but such waste denies New Zealand of the economic growth that could be achieved. If we can help folk avoid those disasters then we’re happy to make a difference.

Q:

How does the service pay for itself?
A:We look after and charge fees for managing portfolios. But we are happy to just point you in the right direction, give you some tips on what’s best for you and importantly, keep you away from the high fee, low performance products which unfortunately proliferate the New Zealand investment scene.
